Spikes and tape will not deter Ibis. Better to create a fence/Structure with wood and netting from the arch to the ends of each bed. something sturdy that you can open and close.
Love the worms and good insects for plants!π₯°ππ₯°
Hello dear Shy! I have vegetable envy! Here in the woods the deer, rabbits, chipmunks think what we plant is their personal salad bar. We pared down to tomatoes but the deer reached into the tomato cage and chomped the main tomato stalk in half. So we don't even grow tomatoes anymore…we just take our bad selves to the local Farmer's Market. πβ€
Veggie patch blues. Seems easier to just go shopping. I love growing food with little effort involved. Pumpkins, chokos, cherry tomatoes, many herb varieties.
The thing with veggie gardens that I always question is it worth it? Do we get enough produce from the garden to pay for all the materials it takes to build the beds & replenish the soil, fertilizer, the bug sprays, netting, etc.? Would it just be more economical to buy the produce from a produce stand? This is something I always question myself every single year. Lol
There's a cuter option for bird/QFF netting. Bamboo stakes in corners, black irrigation tubing then white insect exclusion netting (there may be an even prettier option) you can just leave the hoops in place and also swap the netting out for shade cloth in summer.
The weed you pulled at 18:47 looks like Wild lettuce to me, you could eat that! Nice in salad or sauteed with other greens, salt, pepper and garlic.
12:11 Thatβs the first time I ever heard of/saw an ibis. I had to look at the transcript to see how itβs spelled. Here in Louisiana theyβd probably get put in a pot of gumbo or jambalaya lol.
My mom says the tiny radishes are the best.
If carrots are grown in soil that is too fertile they will grow more leaves than root. Thin them out if they are growing to close together for bigger carrots. Your chilli looks like it's lacking in nutrition, but it should be fine. Cut it back by half, and when the weather starts warming up give it some fertiliser. It should come back to life. If you net your brassicas as soon as you plant them it will keep the White Cabbage butterfly off your plants and you shouldn't have a problem with caterpillars. Good luck! π
Dear Shy, I'm in the same city, same issues. Yes nets are the only way! Citrus trees, chillies, cherry tomatoes, snow peas and salads grow best. I find the chillies will even grow well in pots amongst the ornamentals. Fresh sugar cane mulch attracts slugs so wait for the seedlings to come up and then add aged mulchπ
Yeah! You conquered!
Shy, could you try berries on your trellis? Also pickled carrots π₯ and green beans are so yum!
I grow lots of veggies. Coffee waste helps around seedlings to keep bugs away. Add some zeolite to your soil. Grow some sacrificial flowers like nasturtians. And plant good bug attractants. I don't treat any bugs because the good bugs will come in to eat them if you leave them. Those Bunnings worms are better in a worm box. Ground worms and composting worms are different. Get a worm farm and add their castings to your soil. The eggs will hatch into the soil and they"ll do great!! A worm farm will do your composting for you.
Your veggie patch will get more productive with time. The soil (in theory) should get more active with time!
I feel youβ¦between insects and mammals trying to eat my plants and fruit, plus plant diseases, it feels impossible sometimes. Iβm choosing to focus on plants that do well without much fuss or that are so beloved that Iβm willing to fight for them, like your chilis.

Hey Shy! South Florida 10b "wanna-be" growing zone over here. You came into my algorithm thankfully….and have been a big inspiration for me. I hope to have a garden like yours someday. And have wondered if I could design a garden incorporating flowers/cactus AND food….and it look pretty….
Does it have to be separate you think?
I would LOVE your thoughts/ideas/input!!!
lol Iβve been swearing off vege growing for several decades but come Spring there I am on Eden Seeds buying more seeds
I focus on herbs for cooking. A bit easier?
Smelly herbs can keep some of the bugs away (at least where I live). I use rosemary, thyme, marigolds, etc.:) my favorite flower to grow that is a vegetable would be sweet peas they are so beautiful. Sweet potatoes and cucumber have beautiful flowers too.:) i donβt have the bird problem, but we have rabbits here. The only thing that works is a barrier of some kind. Sorry that isnβt more helpful. But I know you got this! β€ love your videos, thanks for sharing your gardening journey.
πππ. Your kale looks worse than my broccoli when l tried to grow that. When l grew beans & snow peas, the snails ate them. When l tried to grow carrots they were all stunted because l have too many rocks in my soil. Plus, its only me and my 20 yo grandson in my house & we are not vegetarian. I'm with you. I decided l would stick to what l'm best at, which is the ornamental stuff and cut flowers. I sell cut flowers so that makes more sense for me.
I burst out laughing with the dipel, because l have been there, done that……sooooo true, why not make 5 gram sachets???? ππ. WTF! It does work though. You could also make hoops over your kale, etc & cover with insect netting, which is the most effective.
Hahaha so spot on!!
Beer traps are great for slugs and snails
Potatoes are easier and rewarding, just in pots
Enjoyed your video π
I love my little chaotic veggie garden, even if it drives me nuts sometimes. π It definitely helps with the aesthetic (and bugs) to have flowers and herbs mixed in with your edibles. I'm also an avid pickler and love to experiment. My favourite odd combo was pickled spaghetti squash with garlic and lemon thyme. So yummy with some cheese and crackers π
Regarding the animal deterrents, I would definitely avoid anything ultrasonic because it'll affect any animals who happen to live in your neighborhood, not just the unwanted ones, and it will make YOU feel uncomfortable even if you can't "hear" it, it still might give you headaches.
When I was a kid, my uncle went to war with the squirrels and bought a few ultrasonic deterrents and put them up all over the yard. Their kids also had a family of pet rabbits who lives in a little rabbit hutch on the one side of the house, very cute. A month or two later there was some sort of incident over the weekend and they all died, I'll spare you the details but let's just say it was a "locked room murder mystery", very Clue board game. Rabbit, in the hutch, driven mad from the headache-inducing noise it couldn't escape. The story still horrifies me 20 years later, tbh.
You can get that netting in clear too, which wouldnt look as obvious.
I've never seen a more relatable video! π€£ I feel everything you discuss!! I really thought I wanted to grow veggies but it's so boring π
