It definitely looks like a plum. Do they stay green when ripe? If so it’s probably a greengage plum.
Plums are fine for dogs but it’s not great if he’s eating them whole as the pits can cause blockages (more so in small dogs but risk is still there) and the stems and pits are toxic (although the pit would need to be crunched up to be toxic).

They go a bluey colour and they have white flowers if that helps.
