Community members in Jefferson County are invited to dig into a hands-on gardening experience this summer through the new “Grow With Us” Tomato Program, hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The program is designed to help participants learn how to successfully grow tomatoes at home while receiving guidance from local Horticulture Specialist, Kala Miller. By signing up, participants will receive either a tomato plant with a grow bag or a four-pack of tomato plants to nurture throughout the season.
From June through August, registrants will gain access to a series of educational resources delivered by email. Topics include proper transplanting techniques, trellising, identifying and managing pests and diseases, harvesting tips, and creative ways to use fresh tomatoes. The program officially kicks off with an in-person event on June 3 from 2:00 to 4 p.m. at the Fairfield Public Library, located at 104 W. Adams Avenue. For those unable to attend the kickoff, tomato plants can be picked up after the event at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Jefferson County Office.
