TOPEKA, Kan. — A growing community organization is planting seeds for the future of Capital City neighborhoods and beyond.
According to the organization’s website, Common Ground grew out of its long history of promoting community gardening, starting with Hi-Crest Community Garden, just south of East 37th Street on Colfax. The gardening group incorporated in 2011 as a nonprofit organization.
Theh organization’s president said Common Ground has increasingly provided support services and gardening know-how to community gardens since its inception.
“Community gardens are kind of a special case,” Barb LeClair explained. “They bring people together to develop relationships, develop communities,” the representative said. “We define a community garden as a garden where people from more than one household come together on a shared piece of ground to grow food.”
“On behalf of DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers, we’re honored to recognize this week’s Pay It Forward recipient, Topeka Common Ground,” partner Richard James said. “We love how you encourage community gardening and we’re excited to present you with a check for $500.”
“Thank you to DeVaughn James,” LeClair said. “We’re excited to have this to help support community gardens in Shawnee County.”
“You’re welcome,” James replied.
Common Ground’s mission is to “promote, establish, and support sustainable and environmentally friendly community gardens in Topeka.”
