A new community garden could be created in Rochdale’s largest housing estate as expansion plans roll on.

The Kirkholt estate is currently in line to get an additional 28 homes. The proposal includes a 23-home apartment block and five terraced homes off Queens Drive.

The developer, Mosscare St Vincent Housing (MSV), says all the homes would be available for social rent (around 60 per cent of market rates).

An old block of flats used to sit on the site next to the A664 (Queensway), but it was demolished in 2009 and used as a temporary space by Kirkholt Medical Practice. This was before the health centre got its permanent digs down the road. The land has sat vacant ever since.

Now plans have been tabled for a new community garden to compliment the proposed new housing site. It would be run by Q Gardens, a community group that already operates in the Kirkholt area.

The new community garden would be an extension to their existing offer for locals. According to their website, the group welcomes anyone with an interest in growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers.

Planning papers read: “The small loss of unused space will be balanced through the anticipated community use of the site.

“The provision of community garden infrastructure offers clear social and environmental benefits to the site and enhances the overall quality of land use while retaining a natural use of land.”

A decision on the plans, tabled by Rochdale council, is expected in the coming months.
