You don’t need matching pots to create a stunning container garden… and in this video, I’ll show you why.
I’m putting together a 3-container grouping using a mix of real terra cotta, a surprisingly realistic budget pot, and even a painted plastic container—and the result turned out better than I expected.
Along the way, I’ll walk through:
* How to design using the “rule of three”
* How to mix containers without them looking mismatched
* What to plant for structure, color, and balance

Hello everyone, can you tell the difference between the midsized plastic container and the smaller real terra cotta pot at 2:37 ?
Glad you peeled the label off. ha ha Like terra cotta yet it is expensive. Moving towards ‘upgrading’ to large pots as the squirrels and rabbits have found our courtyard and the plants on the ground. Great video. ❣
I would have not known the med size pot was plastic! The trio looks so nice together. Do you think you can do a detailed video on how you fastened your containers to the block wall? I am not great with tools, but I can get some help. I am in So Cal, Zone 10a. Thanks!🦋🌸🌼
Hi William. I love how you chose these amazing plants to maintain the shape and color of the containers. A brilliant idea! I'm excited to see what other plants you'll be growing. Have a wonderful weekend! 🌿🌻🌿
Flowering plants are beautiful. I like the pots you chose…my pots are not the same. I get at Walmart, usually best find.
Don’t believe people pay attention to pots matching. They are looking at flowers, what attracts good pollinators.

I put my perennials in ceramic pots and my annuals in decorative plastic ones. I'm slowly adding more durable ceramic pots as sales permit.
I love container gardening, but also plant in the garden. I will never guess the second container was plastic, great find! Beautiful combination! 🪴
I am trying to have most things in Terra Cotta as I feel it has a more classic look. Have been lucky to find some unique ones at flea markets, estate sales, and even Home Goods. I try to top dress some of them with pebbles or stones, depending on the size.
Your hanging baskets are looking amazing as always. It looks so nice together, good job. I have some of both, I will have to look at my Walmarts about that pot, it looks like some I already have.
Thanks again for some great tips

As you know I love my terracotta pots but the cost of good frost proof ones are expensive,( I wait till the sales) luckily if looked after they last for many years and weather beautifully. Good faux ones are now looking so natural it’s hard to tell the difference. We have had some lovely warm weather over the last few weeks, dare I say we want some rain 😂 🌸🌼
That is the perfect shade of brown on the large pot. I love containers, but still need to figure out how to set up some type of drip system for them.
