As if held together by magic, 150 brass rods that gradually decrease in thickness from 7mm to 1mm create an ethereal sculpture that recalls a familiar form. That ‘magic’ is in fact delicate silver soldering that allows this Denmark-born artist to use flat metal sheets like a 3D line drawing. The rhythmic presence and absence of material frames light, grounding the piece in Ane’s memories of Nordic midsummer evenings. ‘To create such lightness out of something as unyielding as solid metal and use that to honour the negative space is breathtakingly original,’ says House & Garden editor Talib Choudhry, chair of the jury. ‘Achieving exceptional precision on a modest scale, this vessel makes us look at something we’ve seen many times before with new eyes.’ anechristensen.com; ane@anechristensen.com; @ane.c

Each of the 18,000 stitches that adorn the chair made by this London-based Brazilian-born creative speaks to needlework as a quietly radical act, used by women as a tool for survival, repair and protest, and passing on memories and skills through generations. That the fabric used – some 60 metres – is deadstock cotton from the fashion industry tells a timely story of consumption and waste. The base structure was made from layers of coconut fibres, horsehair, hessian and calico. ‘It lures you in with its delicious, Viennetta like creases and then stuns you with the realisation that such a striking piece could be made from material headed for landfill,’ says jury member TF Chan, director of Collect Art Fair. tessasilva.com; info@tessasilva.com; @tessasilva
