Squirrels slowly ate a hole through my rodent proof. Lid. Would rather not throw out. Any quick tips to fill this hole in?

Do you know what kind of plastic the lid is made from? Depending on the material, you can solvent weld a similar piece of plastic on for a permanent repair. Alternatively, you can glue on some metal mesh (which might let some stinkiness out but some rainfall in, which could be helpful!)

Its probably hdpe. In europe (dont know if its the same in us) there is a recycle traingle with a 2 inside. Sometimes marked as hdpe or pehd.

Some milk jugs or the cap usually is hdpe. Bottles for schampoo too.

I cut into smaller pieces, and put into a ceramic or glass form (ovenproof lunchkonsert?), and put it into the oven. Let it melt and try to shape it. Repeat several times if not enough material.

If you are happy with the general thickness and size, you can shape it a bit when the temp is right during cooling.

Reheat, and before applying the patch, heat the lid with a hot air gun, and try to fuse the materials.

If you dont have a hot air gun you can probably use glue or similar to glue it.

Not so sure if fixing the hole will stop the squirrels, they have learnt that they can access the bin and that you put food in it.

Perhaps if you moved the bin or did not put in anything that the squirrels eat for a while, otherwise they will probably just make another hole.

(Warning wife did not approve of using the owen to melt plastic, and i am glad i did it on the summer so i could ventilate the kitchen alot).
