Sliced my tomato open for a BLT. What is growing in there and why? I couldn’t get myself to eat it. I had a BL instead.

  1. The seeds germinated you can plant them to grow more tomatoes

    Those are… tomato plants.

This happens with old tomatoes and sometimes tomatoes that have been refrigerated. The gel coating around the seeds ferments and allows them to germinate and sprout.

Tomato seeds grow into… tomato plants!

When this happens, I just scrape out the seed cavities and eat the rest of the tomato. They look gross, but are just roots growing out of the tomato seeds.

Store bought tomato? This happens because they try to process them for shelf life instead of naturally picking a few a week off the plant as they ripen. Won’t hurt you, but not appealing.

Those sprouting seeds look too much like maggots. I know it’s wasteful, but I’d have to those away. I once bought a head of broccoli, and when I washed it, I found a huge cutworm curled up inside. I couldn’t eat broccoli for some time thereafter. Nature is wonderful, but sometimes unappetizing.

    Yes, vivipary.

Never had it happen in any of my tomatoes…. only peppers

i find these to be the most vigorous. my campari was huge. so juicy and sweet, nothing like their parents or what is sold in stores. happy growing should you choose to. these would be really fun.

I had some I forgot about when I was in college and they sprouted right through the skin. I would’ve planted it if I had anywhere to put it.
