ORANGE — A rare corpse flower at Shangri La Gardens has begun to bloom, giving visitors a short window to see and smell, a phenomenon that could disappear for years.

Shangri La Gardens announced that “Elenore has officially started to open” and said the bloom is expected to last only 24 to 48 hours. The gardens said the plant’s bloom “might not occur again for 10 years” and noted that it is known for its “powerful odor.” Once fully in bloom, the gardens said, it is expected to fade quickly.

Assistant Director of Marketing Lauren Barbay invited the public to visit, and Shangri La Gardens extended viewing hours for Sunday, May 10, and Monday, May 11.

New corpse flower viewing hours are:

Sunday, May 10: Last entry 10 p.m.

Monday, May 11: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. (last entry 6:30 p.m.)

The gardens said the back garden will close at 4:30 p.m. on May 10 and 6:30 p.m. on May 11.

Elenore is on view in the Classroom Greenhouse at Shangri La Gardens, and admission is free. A livestream is available at shangrilagardens.org/corpse-flower.
