We made this from a little stream close to .our home. Everything is from the same place and placed it next to a window. 1 week in and the water is perfectly clear now but I am wondering if I should remove the algae floating on top. I put that in 2 days later, brought from the same stream.

I would remove it or I think it will make the whole thing much more cloudy green
Yes, remove the algae and put in a real aquatic plant. Without a plant it’s not gonna work since it’s one of the key elements. Most of us use fishtank plants..
While algae is also a plant in that sense, it consumes more oxygen at night than it produces during the day and slowly causes oxygen deprivation.
In addition, avoid direct sunlight at all cost, seeing it’s by a window. If it’s a north-facing window, it’s fine, since it shouldn’t get direct sunlight.
Also, remove some water so the water surface is the widest possible up to where the glass starts to curve upward to help with gas exchange.
