Hanging baskets are a popular choice for showcasing flowers around the home or throughout the garden, bringing vibrant colour to outdoor areas. They’re straightforward to plant and maintain, as long as they’re properly watered and fed. This becomes particularly crucial going into the summer period, when they can dry out rapidly.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has advised gardeners to consider their watering strategy before planting their baskets. They said: “Hanging baskets tend to dry out more quickly than other types of containers. Water can be easily wasted from them. If you have many baskets, you might want to consider using an automated watering system.”

For those whose hanging baskets are already planted and positioned, daily monitoring is essential.

Gardeners are encouraged to water their baskets once or twice daily, unless the compost remains damp.

Morning watering is recommended for optimal results, allowing plants to absorb moisture before the sun causes evaporation.

Watering during the evening is also possible, though this timing may invite unwanted pests, reports the Express.

The RHS said: “Drying out is an increased risk as the plants grow and days remain warm and windy.

“An easy way to check whether they need water is to gently lift or nudge the baskets to gauge their weight. If they feel really light, they need watering.

“Try to avoid them drying out to the point where plants start to droop, but if they do wilt, you can place a bucket underneath to capture the water that runs off and return it to the basket.

“This will save water and soluble nutrients that are needed for flowering.” If the compost becomes excessively dry, water may not penetrate properly, so aim to maintain a slight moisture level.

Should you water until it drains from the basket’s base, vital nutrients may be lost, so the specialists recommend watering with care.

Hanging baskets can benefit from periodic feeding, but it’s essential to water them beforehand.

The gardening professionals explained: “Plant roots can be damaged by liquid feed that is not diluted correctly; always follow the instructions on the pack.”

Should your baskets endure through summer and into autumn, they’ll continue requiring regular watering, so remember to inspect the soil.
