I’m fairly new to hydroponics and I’ve been recommended a tent. Not sure all that they do or if I need one.

Not necessary for a single plant setup like that. tent/mylar mainly helps if you’re trying to maximize light but your LED is already doing the work. id just leave it as is and see how it goes

No you don’t “need” a tent. Your plant will thrive if you keep your pH, EC and reservoir temps in a good range, even when no tent is used.

A tent is nice to have since you can control the environment your plant is in more easily which leads to healthier plants with better yield.

In a tent, growlights will be contained, no stress on your eyes if you are living next to your plant.
Also the night cycles are pitch black inside a tent. If your plant receives light during the night phase it can lead to stress.
In a tent you could also flip the day and night cycle more efficiently for various reasons. (mostly temp related.)
Light output is more efficient in a tent.
    Better humidity control overall etc.

What kind of pepper plant are you growing?
