It’s definitely from Nelumbo sp., but I don’t know how to tell apart N. lutea and N. nucifera seed pods. N. lutea is native to “North America” and its range includes the shoreline of Lake Michigan, so it’s not inconceivable that some seed pods (if they’re from N. lutea) got washed into the lake?

Lotus pods get sold as dried flower decor. Someone threw a bunch of them in the lake.

Dried ones are in floral bouquets. Maybe they were from ones thrown in the lake

Dehydrated Lotus seed pods.
Lotus was my first guess. I get uneasy just looking at them.
