Bought this Triple Crown and Black Satin blackberry plant a couple weeks ago. Kept them in original containers until cold weather finally moved on. I’m in 6b and we’ve had a very confusing Spring.

Since I planted these, they’ve both gone downhill. Yellowing leaves, browning and dried leaves. Is it dead? I know I won’t get production this year so I’m not overly concerned about short term health, but I don’t want to invest time and then have a dead plant once it’s too far into the summer to replant.

To show progression, including four pictures of the two plants, a week apart. In order: TC original plant, then a week later. Followed by BS original plant, then a week later.

The easy answer is to exchange back at the store but man, they do not do a good job caring for these and all of the plants look a little rough. These were the best looking ones (not that they were super healthy looking in the first place) at the time of purchase.

The Triple Crown definitely looks worse off than the Black Satin.

(I know I need mulch, I have pine mulch waiting but didn’t want to cover until I was sure I’m keeping these).

Thoughts?

  1. Were the roots broken up when you transplanted them? What soil? pH? These plants aren’t even remotely dead yet but I would verify pH w/ a cheap soil test kit. If you didn’t break up the root ball and just popped them out of the nursery pot and put them in soil then you’re gonna have to dig them up and remedy that.
