The Del Mar City Council approved a proclamation declaring May 9 Del Mar Garden Club Community Gardens Day.

“The mission of the Del Mar Garden Club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening and to contribute to the beauty of Del Mar,” Del Mar Mayor Tracy Martinez said during a May 5 City Council meeting, reading from the proclamation. “The Del Mar Garden Club consists of Del Mar resident volunteers who have an expertise and passion for gardening, and who each year contribute thousands of volunteer hours to create and maintain public gardens that serve as living classrooms, pollinator habitats and peaceful gathering spaces for residents and visitors.”

The designation by the council came days before the garden club hosted visitors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 9 at each of its garden sites throughout the city, where docents were stationed to talk about the history, specimens and answer questions.

Activities throughout the day included a scavenger hunt, ladybug giveaway, and free plant cuttings.

“Our club’s history is woven into the very soil of this city,” said Jill Gartman, the club’s president. “We are proud to maintain four distinct gardens that residents and visitors alike enjoy daily as well as provide vital habitats for our coastal ecosystem.”

The club, founded in 1988, is open to Del Mar residents.
