May is recognised as the last official month of spring, which typically means temperatures are rising as summer draws nearer, and gardens are beginning to awaken and blossom following the lengthy winter period.
This time of year also represents a particularly busy spell for gardeners, whether professional or amateur, as plants begin to flourish while it’s also the moment to commence sowing any new plants you wish to enjoy throughout the coming months.
Additionally, grass lawns will require some care and attention, whether that involves cutting it back or ensuring it remains healthy and vibrant.
To assist with this, a gardener named Ish Kamran has outlined his straightforward three-step guide on how you can ensure your lawn remains green and healthy throughout the entire summer, which involves completing one particular task this month.
“Want a perfect lawn like I’ve got here? Well, I’ll show you just how easy it is in three steps,” Ish said at the start of his TikTok video.
He then proceeded to outline the three steps, and how to carry them out.
1. Prep the grassContent cannot be displayed without consent
“We’re gonna start off with prep work, and that’s getting the ground ready and getting rid of the pesky moss,” Ish said.
To achieve this, Ish used lawn tonic with iron sulphate, which he mixed into a watering can before applying it across your lawn, then leaving it for several days to take effect, with Ish explaining it will help the moss ‘turn to crisp’.
Once this is complete, you can progress to the second step.
2. Scarify the lawn
Next, Ish recommends scarifying the lawn, either using an electric lawn scarifier or a rake.
Scarifying is a deep-cleaning, mechanical process that removes thatch (dead moss and grass) from your lawn to improve water, air, and nutrient access to the soil, promoting healthier, denser growth. This is best done in spring, from late March to early May, or in autumn, between September and October.
He also recommends aerating your lawn, either with the same tool used to scarify, or with a simple garden fork, though this may take a little longer.
3. Overseed the lawn
“Once you’ve successfully butchered your lawn, you can now focus on overseeding it, especially where there’s bald spots, where the weed and moss were,” Ish said, adding that specialist seed is even available for the shadier corners of your garden.
He then advises leaving your lawn to grow for four to six weeks, ensuring it remains well-watered throughout. Once complete, you can introduce a green feed or fertiliser.
“Do this every couple of months or so, and your lawn will absolutely thrive,” Ish explained. “And if you’re particularly lazy, do this in the rain, you don’t have to water it in then.”
Once these three steps are complete, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a pristine, healthy lawn throughout the summer months.
