Pros quoted me between 17k and 22k. Decided to go at it alone with the wife. Took us the whole season hauling 7 tons of gravel and heavy pavers. Under 5k total.

    Hell yeah, no- HELL YEAH!

Good for you and your wife. Before I met my fiance, she would always get contractors to come over and she had countless horror stories. I’m pretty lucky though, my dad is literally Hank Hill from King of the Hill and I was raised having to do basically everything.

I hated it at the time, I just wanted to play Castlevania as a kid but I’m so grateful that I know everything I know.

My thoughts on doing yourself or hiring? A contractor basically comes down to you. Paying close to 10 times more. Clearly that’s not the case in the situation, but my dad always said this thing to me that I think about all the time when I have to do back breaking work around the yard or house.

No one’s going to do a better job than you, it’s not their property, they don’t care. They’re just in it for a quick paycheck.

Something to that effect. And I just think about that all the time. It’s our property, it’s our yard, I’m going to make sure that if I’m putting something down it’s exactly level, I’m going to put in all the extra work and not take any shortcuts because it’s ours and it genuinely means something and I feel like I see that in your guy’s work.

Walk out every morning and every other evening and pat each other on the back.

Don’t need to afford the pros when you can DIY like one. Kudos to you!

Looks good. How did you haul it in the backyard?

Refreshingly honest and a nice diy on top

  7. I can see why you wouldn’t want to pay that given that they were giving you over the top quotes. A fair price seems more like 10k. It’s not exactly an extreme slope to deal with.

So much better than that deck
