What causes this kind of pattern on the stem? I’ve separated this one from the rest of my tomatoes for now since it looks weird and is dropping leaves.

Are you referring to the hairs or the white nodules? Tomatoes are vines and will form roots when the stems come into contact with moisture. That’s why you can burn the stems deeper to form a larger root ball.
I’ll start by saying that I don’t know what your plant has ( if it has anything ), or how to fix it.
But I had a few starts this year that had something very similar going up their stems, and it was causing them to drop branches/leaves. Once I got them out in the garden, I put those sickly looking tomatoes into grow bags, and sprayed a little neem oil on the stem and branches.
I was sure they’d die from whatever was creeping up the stem, but they all recovered, and are currently healthy and setting fruit. The strange discoloration is still on their stems though.
Don’t give up on those plants just yet, they might pull through like mine have!
