My lawnmower stopped working so I wasn’t able to get going as early as I normally would this year. Look what I found! This is in an area that I cleared of Chinese privet last year.

iNaturalist says it’s tall goldenrod.

  1. Heh, it’s kind of a double-sided coin. Yes, not mowing and getting rid of an invasive that was shading out a part of your yard has allowed this native goldenrod to grow. On the other hand, a big reason your whole yard hasn’t just been one one giant field of goldenrod the whole time is because you mow it.

My experience being late to start mowing this year was just an eye-opening amount of invasives, but you deserve flowers for the work you did with privet. Privet was our hardest thing to dig out by far. Kudos!

PS – even though people tend not to buy yellow flowers at the florist, yellow flowers are the color that calm us and help our moods the most. [https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8507779/](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8507779/)

Goldenrod is awesome to have in your yard! It’s great for all sorts of pollinators, smells incredible, and makes a damn good tea!

Looks more like Ruellia simplex (“Mexican Petunia”)
