bear with me I know nothing about plants I thought I just had to water it and give it sunlight

I don’t know the plant name (gift)
I water it once a week
give it indirect sunlight (its far from the curtain i open)
I have had it for 2 years
It has never been repotted
the watering had been on and off it was a gift to my family so I wasn’t in charge of it at first and thought my sister was watering it enough (she wasn’t) It looked its best in March and the second picture is what it looks like today
I noticed this whitish part (on the left) coming up today and I don’t know what it is so my first thought is that its rotting since it seems to look like a hole

It’s difficult for me to tell what’s exactly going on in the picture, but how wet is the soil – squishy wet? Are the leaves turning yellow? Is it giving off a rotten egg smell? I’m unfortunately and currently dealing with a peace lily that has some root rot. Mine has all of those symptoms. Having to completely repot it.
