Hello!

Was digging around looking for information on how to cut back these overgrown hedges the proper way and came up with a lot of different things and moreso an answer that seems to be “depends.”

Was hoping the reddit landscaping sub could toss me a bone on how to go about this.

Just bought the house and the previous older was elderly and clearly let them grow a bit out of control. First time home buyer that got the keys yesterday.

Lovely flora, not sure what they are, but I’d like that foot+ of my driveway back.

Thanks!

They’re boxwoods, they respond well to pruning. You can shear them back, might take a few years to fill back in though.

Cut those back hard during fall/winter

It’s just going to be a pull the bandaid situation. Hack them back slightly further than you want them to be to give them room to grow in.

If you do it now, please check for bird nests first! It’s nesting season.

If appearance is important then pull them out and replace w new. Regeneration after cutting back will take a while.

They are boxwoods. Cut them down to about a foot and dig the rest out of the ground. Replace with something else. They are the contractor grade kitchen fixtures of bushes.
