GARDEN CLUB AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS

Cress Creek Garden Club of Naperville has awarded scholarships to area students and $25,000 in community donations to local nonprofits.

The scholarship winners:

Gianna Cannek, Metea Valley High School graduate who is studying earth and climate science at Middlebury College;

Aidan Dwyer, Neuqua Valley High School senior who is planning to major in landscape architecture;

Julie Hamman, who is earning certification in floral shop management at the College of DuPage;

Emily Lubek, Naperville Central High School graduate majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado;

Isabelle Nobrega, Naperville North High School graduate studying mechanical engineering and environmental science at University of Wisconsin;

Jay Schroeder, Metea Valley High School senior who plans to major in environmental science;

Hannah Wilson, Oswego High School senior who plans to study environmental horticulture and landscape design.

The garden club also donated money for horticulture- and environment-related initiatives to Charity Blooms, College of DuPage, The Conservation Foundation, DuPage Care Center, Garden Works Project, Little Friends, NAMI DuPage, Naperville VFW, Naperville 203 Education Foundation, Normal Moments, SCARCE and We Grow Dreams.

POLICE SEEKING SUMMER YOUTH ACADEMY APPLICANTS

Naperville Police Department is accepting applications through June 4 for its six-week youth academy being held June 11 to July 23.

The youth academy is designed to give teens a working knowledge of the police department and an opportunity to interact with police officers, a department news release said.

Sessions are free and will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays in June and July, excluding the week of July 4.

Classes, discussions and hands-on demonstrations on topics such as patrol operations, police canines, investigations and forensics will be presented.

Participants must be in high school or entering high school in the fall, live or attend high school in Naperville, have parental permission and transportation to the police department, and be a student in good standing with no criminal contacts, the release said.

NAPERVILLE PLAYS EVENT FEATURES KIDS ACTIVITIES

Spring into History and Naperville Plays, a day of hands-on learning and discovery, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Naper Settlement in Naperville.

The event is held in partnership with Knoch Knolls Nature Center, Naperville Public Library and the DuPage Children’s Museum and will include crafts, beekeeping demonstrations, living history demonstrations about blacksmithing, butter churning and corn grinding and a seed germination activity, a news release said.

Admission is free for Naperville residents with proof of residency. Nonresidents can participate by paying museum admission.

The event is designed for families with children ages 3 to 10 but is open to everyone, organizers said. Register at www.napersettlement.org.
