I heard a buzzing against plastic last night and found this big guy on the ground infront of the door. It doesn't seem able to fly, just flapping on the ground. I got it to grab a stick and put it on a plant.
They tend to do this at the end of their life cycle. Dragonflies are one of my favorite insects. Their flight agility is being studied for aviation purposes. All four wings operate independently so they can change directions on a dime.
Not to mention, they’re great pest control! They love snacking on mosquitoes.

I haven’t seen a dragon fly for a few years. We had a heat dome in 2021, and lost so many insects, bugs, birds.. he’s beautiful. I miss them.

Buddy might be in the last days.
I collect good sticks and branches to use as stakes in my garden, even though I have to replace them more frequently than metal or fiberglass. Dragonflies prefer wooden branches. I get lots in my yard, looking pretty and eating mosquitoes.

They breed in our back yard pond. It’s so exciting when one starts hanging around and then a few days later a mate arrives. We have a red + orange pair and then a pair that are both blue. We made sure our mosquito dunk ingredients are safe for dragonfly nymphs. (Can’t find the dragonfly pics so here’s a baby frog instead.)
