Previous owners put down fabric (now falling apart) and a metric fuckton of woodchips at the base of a western redcedar and bigleaf maple, root flares were completely smothered. Cleared it last fall and put in a few ferns. Come spring, not only are western starflower and Oregon grape emerging on their own, but they're holding their own against the St John's Wort (next on my hit list) that wants to claim the area.

    Yeah, I get frustrated with the add cardboard and three inches of soil people. I totally understand their decisions, way more predictable and less work, but the native seedbank is now closer to 6” from the sun.
