I have this tree in my backyard and I’m not sure it’ll survive. It got ran over by my dog and snapped in half which then split into the two branches you see. The larger trunk and the smaller one. But i then accidentally hit the bigger one with my weed wacker. Would cutting that smaller branch off at the bottom help it?

You’ve committed a litany of sins against this tree.
That’s severe damage. I’d start over.
For next time, you want to have one single leader.
The tree ring should be gotten rid of. It didn’t even help this tree against you. Tree rings compress the soil and people can’t help but fill them up. It causes the root flare to be buried, which yours is.
Don’t weed wack around trees. You can kill them in seconds and lose years what could have been a nicer tree.
