I wanted some large planters outside the front of my house to add some greenery, I have these two little niches I thought would be good to grow a decent small tree in front of. Both next to drainpipes and a drain so I thought I could have down pipe diverters and be self watering.
Bought the biggest pot I could afford for the larger space (79cm, woodies, €180) but they’re a little underwhelming.
Should I raise them up?
Group more pots?
I’ll probably add some pink flowered “spiller” plants for a pop of colour.
Any other ideas?

I think it’s because the pots are tall conicaal cylinders and because they are light coloured they disappear into the space. Something broader than it is tall would work better, and a dark colour would be more visually substantial because it will contrast against the house wall behind and balance the visual weight of the big window. For example the largest version of these planters, they are 80cm x 80cm and 65cm tall, but need to be lined with fabric and painted to protect the wood. https://www.homeland.ie/products/garden-outdoor-living-garden-planters-87756-woodford-plaza-planter
If you can’t change the pots now, I would centre them in their space, pull them forward a little and add a dark-foliage or a hot-coloured flowering “spiller” plant underneath them.
It’s because they are white on a light background – Paint them !
More pots. Pots in a garden on their on always look plonked. Buy a few more of different sizes. Sometimes you can get sets of pots for cheap enough in Tesco, Lidl etc. place them around the pots you have with different plants in them.
Single pots meh
Pot displays yay
In my opinion
Rhinestones, as many as you can afford.
The colour is lost on the pale background. Plant lots and lots of annuals including trailing ones with bright colours and feed / water often
Bedazzle them.
Or just paint them a nice colour and get a basic stencil to paint a little design around the rim
Mix some cement and plaster it over to give them some texture then paint them in a nice color.
Wow that’s some price for a pot
Different colour. They are same colour as your house, they don’t stand out. Paint them black
Some bedding plant with lots of colour .that will make them stand out
If you ever want to give them a stone effect there’s nice sprays you can get. Small planters with coloured petunias can be nice, you can find ones that are split coloured sometimes or small roses, I got the roses in lidl one year I think they were meant for indoor but they actually grew very well outdoor here and some grew into big enough bushes before they died back. Dianthus can be another nice one some of them have a very nice scent from them. Lupins can be good but some tend to flower for a very short time before the flower dies. Both the roses and petunias required little maintenance just a bit of watering here and there some feed for the roses the odd time and maybe a clipping if they’re going a direction I didn’t want, for the ones that grew massive I did have to make a sort of surround with gardening wire to hold them up but overall they came out nice.
Leave the price tag on them.
Buy some bedding flowers to give colour
