Hello! Beginner gardener here. I have a trellis separating two spaces and would like to create a bit of privacy between them by planting something to grow upwards. Can you help with suggestions please? The planter boxes are about 1.3 metres wide each. Many thanks!

Nasturtiums. They’ll give good privacy in summer, look good, and they’re edible (leaves, flowers, and seed pods) and very tasty.

    Fast grower: humulus lupulus (hops)

Slower grower but lots of colorful flowers: Clematis

I’m a fan of climbing roses. Not sure they will grow quick enough for you though.

    Fast growing and evergreen: jasmine

Pop some sweet peas on for now whilst you work out a perennial to grow up and plant in autumn.

Look into clematis (suggest summer and winter flowering), roses, jasmine, climbing hydrangea….

Small pots so maybe roses wouldn’t be too happy.

Trachleospernum jasaminoides – great evergreen climber with lovely white flowers and an intoxicating smell.

I don’t think hops are the best choice for that. They like to get huge and grow vertically. The container would constrain them but you’d still get pretty sparse coverage of the trellis. Plus they die back completely in Autumn and don’t start to return until spring.

    I’d put some honeysuckle in.

Star Jasmine to provide year round screening with flowers and scent in the summer. Clematis, nasturtiums added for colour and beauty

  9. Climbing roses (wild grow quicker), ivy, sweet peas

There are clematis varieties that are evergreen/semi evergreen and don’t need hard pruning – I love them. My favourite is the winter-flowering c. urophylla “Winter beauty”, which has a lovely fragrance.

Star jasmin, evergreen clematis, dogwood, passion flower.

Grapes are a quick growing and nice to eat!

English ivy, you get a thick layer of privacy

  14. Clematis montana (buy a few and they grow like mad) though they’re not evergreen so less privacy in winter (the woody growth will provide some cover). There’s also an evergreen clematis (icr the name).

Clematis armandi is evergreen and grows like the clappers. Lovely white flowers with luscious perfume in spring

All of my suggestions have been mentioned, so all I’ll add is that is one beefy trellis! Don’t think I’ve seen one made from 2x2s before.

Evergreen and will do well* being contained, brilliant for wildlife….. Ivy

Anything else is either going to hate being contained longer than a season or two, not grow in enough to give you privacy or will fade in winter. Your best bet is honestly Ivy, you can cut it back hard and it lives forever.

You can put something pretty at the front of the tub, summer bulbs will do nicely like allium or lilies.

Which direction does it face/how much sun does it get?
