This week’s UFO update didn’t go quite how I planned… but that’s part of the journey, right?
In Week 18 of my second year of sewing at least 15 minutes a day, I was so close to finishing my Ribbon Star quilt top… until I hit a snag with the border. Instead of forcing it, I decided to pause and search for the perfect fabric (because we all know the wrong border can ruin the whole vibe).
So what did I do instead? I pulled out a long-neglected UFO… my Blue Hydrangea One Block Wonder! This project has quite the history, going all the way back to 2017, through teaching, COVID interruptions, and multiple restarts. This week I finally made some real progress again and honestly, it felt so good.
Now I need your help:
Do you think the “Secret Garden” fabric is a good match for the Ribbon Star border?
Or do you have a better suggestion? Let me know in the comments!
✨ This week’s progress:
Finished all rows for the Ribbon Star quilt top (minus the border)
Switched gears and sewed multiple rows for my One Block Wonder
Discovered I may be missing a couple rows… 😬
✨ Goals for next week:
Find the perfect border fabric
Keep building rows on the One Block Wonder
Maybe (hopefully!) finish the Ribbon Star top
Thanks so much for following along on this UFO journey. New updates every week!
🧵 Come back next week to see which project gets closer to the finish line!

Love the one block wonder. ❤
Ah, yes– it definitely makes sense to have figured this project would only sit for a bit!
Both of them look fabulous!
Lovely
Fun! Beautiful work. Possible border fabric could be Anna Maria Parry or her daughter, Juliana Horner for Northcott.
I think the floral for your border will be too dark for your quilt. I think you should take the top to the quilt shop and see
Both quilts are going to be beautiful when finished❤
Very nice.
Amy Butler stopped designing fabric in 2018, sadly.
I love the fabric in your one block wonder quilt!!
I wonder if the black background on the "secret garden" print Google suggested might be a bit two strong, given that your ribbon star quilt has those off white sashing pieces. There's a relatively new Riley Blake –> Lori Holt collection "Berrys and Sage" which has some of the same greens and pinks that are in the "secret garden" print.
Oh I love both of them… curious?, how many quilts you finished in a year?
I have some of that secret garden print as a wideback. The background on mine is more like a very dark purple than a black and because it's a wideback the scale of the flowers is very large so depending how wide your border is, not a lot of them would show.
I do love a print sashing but wondering 🤔 . . . are you foursquare against a solid? Or a dot, gingham etc? A print but not a busy one that competes. The quilt is so gorgeous it needs to be the 🌟 of the show. (Just my two cents thats worth nuthin’ with inflation. 😜)
Great progress Leah 💪🏻 Loving the colours in the hydrangea quilt. Good luck finding your border fabric
I love what you are doing. Great job! I hope I can follow your example sometime! I keep looking for that gorgeous spider web quilt. Did I miss it? If not, do you have a timeline for quilting it and finishing it?
I sure appreciate the way you just keep moving forward with another something when faced with a bump in the road or a complete road block. That is the way to get things done in life. The hydrangeas are gorgeous!
