So my small garden bed has been getting some unwanted diners… i was setting up my new bigger bed and decided to surround it with the cover crop peas I was also planting inside to see if making a buffet outside the bed would stop critters.

The peas inside the bed have almost no bug/pest damage, and it looks like whoever is eating out here is eating the peas I planted outside the bed. There's a spot where the great wall of peas opens and I can see something came up for a nibble on that side.

    Ooh! This is interesting!

I did something similar over the years – deliberately setting out water and bird seed for the local squirrels so they leave my plants alone. It works! They’re just hungry!

And since I’ve been doing that, we now have a Merlin (bird of prey) live in the area during the warmer months, and they seem to keep the squirrel population under control.

I’m starting to believe the solution to SOME pests is to accept them as a part of the garden, and make an area for them to eat/drink, so they stop being pests and start being lovely woodland creatures again.

(I still squash invasive species, and there is no room for rats in my garden. I’m not completely loopy)

    Trap crop!

I’m glad it seems to be working for you.
