It was bright out with temperatures in the low 20s.

Randy Jalbert was delighted with the weather at the Langley Garden Club’s Spring Show and Sale on Saturday, May 2 at Southridge Fellowship Church.

It was held at a new time, explained Jalbert, co-president of the club.

“We’re actually having a sale a week later than our normal time frame, which has turned out very good for us. And we were excited to see that weather forecast and nice sunny weather,” Jalbert told the Langley Advance Times, who was fielding orders under the shade of the large main canopy filled with plants in the church parking lot.

“We’re very lucky this year,” Jalbert said.

“We’ve set up in snow, we’ve set up in rain, we’ve had freezing temperatures. So we’re very lucky this year to have the sun and we’ve had a very good turnout.”

Jalbert said the sale benefits the garden club, and other community groups.

“We are a non-profit association and we in turn make donations back into our community, supporting programs in different schools for food, supporting our club members,” Jalbert explained.

“We bring in speakers for our members’ benefits. So we do what we can to support our community.”

Pam Erickson, who is also club co-president, noted it was their 85th year.

“I believe we’ve had the garden show itself for about 60 of those years, the actual spring show and sale,” Erickson observed. “It’s our main fundraiser for the year.”

Because of the excellent weather, planting season was starting sooner, Erickson added.

“This year seems to be quite a bit earlier. I think we’ve passed our frost level now.”

Inside the church, a floral show, refreshments and a bake sale were underway. Outside, plants, along with a dozen other gardening-related vendors selling everything from seeds to perennials and maple trees to blueberries.

Affiliated with the B.C. Council of Garden Clubs, the Langley Arts Council and the Langley Agricultural Association, the stated goals of the Langley Garden Club are to “promote and encourage vegetable gardening, floral and shrubbery landscaping, decorative floral arts and to nourish a creative congeniality among the club members and the community.”
