Today through May 9 and then again from May 13-16, South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity is running Women Build, a volunteer-driven effort where teams of women help frame and raise walls for future Habitat homes.
Each day, up to four teams of eight volunteers will work on homes at the Tâlíčn development in Tumwater, before moving to the 22-home Mill Crossing site in Yelm on May 16. Participants fundraise in advance to take part, with this year’s goal set at more than $85,000.
According to a recent press release from the organization, census data shows only 34% of single mothers own their homes, compared to 79% of married couples. The release also cited nationwide reports that stable, affordable housing can improve health, academic performance for children, and families’ ability to save.
“Women Build is an amazing event that brings inspired women together from across the community,” Elizabeth Walker, CEO of South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity, said in the release. “Last year, Women Build volunteers and sponsors raised over $100,000 to support affordable homeownership. This year, with experienced volunteer fundraisers, we think participants will raise even more to support our mission.”
In addition to Women Build, the organization noted it has volunteer opportunities year-round at its stores, construction sites, and offices for those looking to get involved.
