That appears to be a ming thing, not a crested Bolivian torch. Hard to say 100% without seeing the spines.

It’ll want full sun and to be watered a week or so after the soil starts to dry out. These guys grow kind of slow ime, especially compared to any of my trichos.

Tip: It hurts their feelings when you call them “ugly.”

It’s a TBMC, or crested Bolivian torch. It’s not really tropical it would rather get really wet then dry out quickly which is why it’s recommended to keep your soil fairly inorganic. Personally mine do well in 60:40 inorganic:organic with just cactus/succulent blend soil and perlite. Super cool score to be honest! I found one a month ago at Walmart and have been stoked! Already have seen nice fresh green growth! A really fun one to watch! Enjoy!

its a tbmc i use 40% coco coir 40% perlite 10% worm castings and 10% biochar for my soil but theyll grow well in just about any well draining cactus soil i give my ones full sun and water and fertilise every 2 weeks in the growing season

I picked up a few of these mutant Bolivians as well & they’ve been putting out a ton of growth since I’ve repotted them. I have them in a potting-mix that’s probably 70% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, lava-rock, & crushed terracotta) & 30% organic (worm-castings & Fox Farms Ocean Forest), as well as Osmocote’s slow-release fertilizer pellets. I currently have mine on a seed-heating mat under a SpiderFarmer SF1000 grow-light, which certainly helps.

It was my understanding that mutant forms of plants (like crests, monstrose, & variegated) tend to be slower growers, but my experience so far – as well as what my grower friend has shared – has shown me that the mutant Bolivians grow much faster than the non-mutant variants.
