Noticed at the end of last summer that a portion of the back of the tree seemed to be struggling, this year it seems in much worse shape. Is there any salvaging this situation? In the pics you can see some bark splitting and limbs starting to break. Not sure if the black spots in one of the pic close ups is a fungus or something?

If it has to go, can we plant something in the same spot, or is the area contaminated, assuming it’s some bacteria or fungus?

    oof yeah i’m sorry, it definitely looks like the death spiral. it’s hard to say what it is from photos, maybe very advanced verticillium wilt? if that’s the case it’s soil-born so you could plant resistant things in its place but not another maple. you could have your soil tested to be sure

    Sorry about your tree, it looks like it was a cool feature. But Japanese Maple Toast sounds kind of delicious.
