LEANDER, Texas — Garden City boy’s golf adds another to the trophy case as the Bearkats are the Class 1A State Champions at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander. It’s the first for the program since it won back-to-back in 2018 and 2019.
The team consisted of Brik Fryar, Cohen Batla, Karson Lowery, Rylan Cypert, and Waylyn Davis as the Bearkats earned a collective score of 717. Robert Lee held the lead heading into day two with a score of 353, while Garden City was in a three-way tie for fourth at 361 with Knippa and Wildorado. However, the Bearkats shot a best-356 on day two to power ahead and win by seven strokes over both Knippa and Wildorado.
Fryar shot 91-81 for 172 overall to lead Garden City. Lowery finished at 178, Davis was a stroke behind at 179, Batla scored 188, and Cypert rounded out the team with 204.
In Class 4A, Andrews earned a second-place finish with a score of 589, as Lubbock-Cooper Liberty (Team A) won the state title with a score of 584. The team consisted of Bryson McGowen, Jaden Luebano, Joe Barnes, Michael Huffman, and Tucker Smith as Smith shot 70-72 for a score of 142 and a bronze medal as he tied for third individually at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.
For individual performances, Midland High’s Gilbert Lujan Jr. finished tied for 55th as shot 83-79 for 162 in the Class 6A meet at the White Bluff Resort – Lake Whitney in Whitney. Reagan County’s John Hodge finished in 36th place in the Class 2A meet at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin as he shot 81-84 for a score of 165.
