My soil is extremely dry and cracked (no matter how much I water). Can anyone offer some advice as to how to improve the condition of my soil so grass will actually grow?

Not much you can do this late. Use the summer to kill off any weeds I guess. In the meantime, order a soil analysis. Also, upload another picture, so we can get a better look at the area.

After Labor Day, have it aerated. Mow low, spread .25-.5” of good quality, screened 50-50 soil, and put down your high quality seed (nothing from Home Depot!)

    Also in VA.

Clay soil is a large issue for alot of VA. I’d get some mushroom or leaf compost with a little sand mixed in and rototill it into your existing soil. this will help break it up, give it some nutrients, and compost will help with water retention.

Also recommend soil samples so you know how much to fertilize. I’ve attached a sample of mine from this month (I live in VA too).

    Good luck
