Terracotta pot for basil plant?

Hello – Ive been keeping a basil plant on the windowsill sitting in the plastic pot it came in and a shallow bowl filled with water.

Last night i attempted to upgrade to a terracotta pot and saucer, but I’ve found that the pot itself has been absorbing the water!

Should I just let the pot saturate itself with water and push on?

Or have I purchased the wrong pot for this situation?
