We have two beech trees in our garden, planted in 1999. Two years ago, I put a circle of loose, heavy stones around one tree and a circle of wood around the other tree. Was this a bad move? Right now they still look like they are in good health.

EDIT: the circle on the 2nd picture is made of logs, not rocks!

    Trees can take several years to actually display the results of damage, but a ring of stones or other heavy material right in the root zone is never good for them.

    You should definitely remove that stuff.

    * Soil compaction
    * Reduced aeration
    * Material build-up covering the root flare and leading to surface/girdling roots

    Just… not good.

    But your circles look amazing – just rebuild somewhere far from the roots 🙃
