I’m posting this because I’m at a loss and I want to see how many other owners are dealing with the same issue.
I bought the Ryobi 80‑V zero‑turn mower (about $5,000) less than a year ago. Both 80‑V OP80720 batteries failed at the same time — stuck at 24% with rapid green flashing. Replacement batteries are discontinued and unavailable anywhere.
I submitted a warranty claim 12 days ago. The only response I’ve received was a request to send a video that I already sent on day one. Since then, nothing.
To make things worse, the 40‑V batteries that came with the mower also won’t charge. I bought a separate charger just to test them, and they also only flash rapidly in green.
At this point, all four batteries are dead, the mower is unusable, and Ryobi has gone silent. My lawn is now overgrown because I have no working equipment.
I’m trying to gather information from other owners who have had the same failures so I can understand how widespread this issue is. If you’ve experienced similar problems with the 80‑V or 40‑V batteries, please comment or message me. I’m keeping a list.

This is why you go gas.
Never had this issue with my FR730V
Have an 80 volt same thing
To have all four batteries die at the same time seems odd. Can you rule out a few things?
The batteries aren’t unusually hot or cold when you are trying to charge them?
Corrosion on the charger terminals or battery terminals isn’t an issue?
Are you able to try a different charger so that you can rule out it isn’t something as simple as a charger problem and not a much more expensive battery problem?
If it is truly a battery problem, this is nothing short of infuriating imo. I would be making corporate phone calls daily.
Gas power wins again.
Planned obsolescence. Throw it away and go get another one. Good thing you saved $30 in gas money for buying an electric one.
Don’t know how long you bought it. But a lot of credit cards have extended warranty policies that you can claim. They like evidence when you don’t get support if under warranty.
I have an EGO mower. Ran into enough issues where the battery quickly drains or overheats going through thick grass, that I let go of any idea of buying their expensive riding mowers. In 7 years I have gone through 3 batteries. Considering the cost of new batteries is almost as much as a new gas mower it seems stupid. I do like my garage not smelling like gasoline, but honestly the batteries in these are a terrible design. They should at least make them modular where you could easily swap out bad 18650 cells when one goes bad.
Sorry to hear that, I’d try a follow up email, wait at least 5 business days, then try reporting through your credit card if you bought it with one. I’ve seen quite a few posts/comments about 80V issues. As just a homeowner, their 18V and 40V weed eater and blower haven’t had any issues for me
Keep calling, keep responding to the ticket, make sure there’s a record of you trying to get it fixed as much as possible, and make sure you’re speaking a way that you have a record of it
Yikes, sorry for this. This reaffirms my decision to keep my gas zero turn forever.
As much as I would love the freedom of not having to buy gas ever again, stories like these scare me into keeping my trusty Honda. I hope you get it sorted soon! In the meantime, maybe you can pick up a beater on marketplace for $50 or something just to keep up with your lawn for now?
2 mistakes were buying Ryobi and buying electric.
Check eBay for refurbished batteries. It’s where I get all of my Ryobi batteries.
My Ryobi batteries all died (unable to recharge or maintain charge) after leaving it in my garage over winter. Guessing it was extreme temperature exposure
