I was watering and forgot about a time a couple years ago when I had several clones all toss funky ribs ar the same time. I somewhat recall having heavy P/K nutrients around and just kinda using that. I don't know if that is what made a difference. It happened to these three that are close to each other and another clone on the same nutrients but in a 12gal pot. Is there any science to rib shifting and nutrients? Mine is anecdotal but it happened to several cacti at the same time and I recall feeling dumb at first for using random stuff I had around. Nonzero chance chelated iron was involved.

My entirely guessed opinion is Usually more ribs appear while the plant grows larger – shifting can happen when a cacti teeters between the growth of a new rib. Nutrients would aid in the growth of a plant.
