Hi everyone! I recently purchased several new haworthias online. They all arrived bare root (or no root) and pretty dried out. I’m new to bare root and am unsure how to proceed. Should I just plop them in soil? Should I use rooting hormone on the ones without roots? Any help is appreciated!

When they ship bare root the shippers let the roots dry before they ship. Just put them in soil, (I use Jack’s Gritty Mix) wait a week and give them a good soaking. Then wait and observe if they start to plump up it will take time for them to settle in. The no root will grow new roots without any intervention.

I always soak any new plants immediately roots or not. Two soak rounds for a couple hours each time. I use a 4 to 1 mix of distilled water and 3%hydrogen peroxide, plus a small splash of alcohol 70%. The first soak gets all the crud off . Then I clean all the dead roots and any extra soil trapped in the nooks and cranes. Rinse under water and soak em again in a clean batch of the 4 to 1 dunk w/alcohol. Then I let em dry for a couples days and pot them on a heavier pumice leaning mineral mix. For anything with out roots I just make a divot in the soil ,nestle them in and drip some water around them ,lightly, not wet. They always plump up and root well for me. My soak are my preventative for hidey critters so as not to introduce obvious bugs. Just my thing ,lots of options.

I always add about 1 tablespoon of water to every 1 cup of mix. Mix should be damp but never clumping. Stir well, shake mix in plastic bag, then use mix to pot up. Place in a low light area. Wait two weeks, then lightly water around the plant. Leave in low light area until new leaves start to show.
