The trunk is probably 3 ft in diameter, and the edge corner of the walkway is 8-9 feet away from the trunk. They dug down about a foot, but I'm not sure if they took out any big roots.

I’m sure it experienced some root damage being that close to the base. But how much damage was done is questionable. If there were major roots that were cut you would likely be able to see them around the perimeter where they dug. Nothing you can do now but just observe the tree and see if it shows any signs of decline. Usually what you will see is tip dieback
