Star jasmine is ideally suited to climbing walls or fences, and fills the garden with a delightful fragrance. To help you get the very best from your jasmine this year, gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish revealed that there are three essential steps to follow – two of which should be carried out in spring – to achieve the most spectacular jasmine blooms come summer. Ish said: “If you want your star jasmine to have an abundance of flowers this year, then there’s a few steps you can take right now in spring in order to make sure it’s absolutely covered in them.”
May is the final month in which star jasmine can be planted, as blooms begin to emerge from June through to the end of August. To ensure you make the most of your jasmine plant this year, Ish offered some invaluable guidance that every gardener ought to heed.
The first consideration for gardeners is the positioning of the jasmine plant within the garden. Star jasmine flourishes in direct sunlight, so it should be kept well away from any shaded areas, reports The Mirror.
Ish noted that receiving approximately six to eight hours of sunlight daily can significantly boost the jasmine’s yield. Make certain to position your jasmine somewhere it can fully benefit from direct sun exposure.
Gardeners should also pay close attention to the type of feed they’re providing for their jasmine plants. Ish explained that feeding the plant properly can make a “massive difference” regarding the quantity of flowers that bloom.
He said: “I like to use two types of feed for my jasmine. First of all, I like to use a slow-releasing feed like bloodfish or bone, or slow-releasing feed pellets, right down to the ground around about now in spring.
“You can also add a good layer of mulch or multipurpose compost around the base to really introduce nutrients into the soil. Slow-releasing is going to help build its foundation up there and help it up here.”
Once you’ve spotted a cluster of buds developing on the star jasmine, Ish recommended introducing tomato feed to the plant. When numerous buds have emerged, apply tomato feed once every fortnight throughout the entire summer season.
