Gardeners have been advised to use washing powder on one common area of their garden, rather than using chemicals
Gardeners urged to sprinkle washing powder in gardens in spring
If you’ve put considerable time, effort and money into ensuring your garden patio looks absolutely pristine, you’ll naturally want to know the best way to keep it in top condition.
While quality patio cleaners and pressure washers can undoubtedly help with this maintenance task, you may be surprised to discover they’re far from your only solution.
In reality, an alternative method has gained enormous traction on social media, and the cleaning product required is quite possibly already tucked away under your kitchen sink at this very moment.

While you typically use Fairy and Persil powder laundry detergent to freshen up your clothing, numerous social media users have started employing these products in their outdoor spaces too.
According to paving specialists at The Driveway Experts, washing powder can remove stains alongside moss to make your patio “look brand new”.
They said: “Washing powder does a great job at cleaning block paving. It gets rid of tough stains, dirt, and debris. The chemicals in it also kill moss and algae that grow on paving.”, reports Devon Live.
“Washing powder is great for cleaning paving, and it’s budget-friendly. But use it carefully. The mix can tackle tough stains and make the paving look new again.
“Yet, always try it on a hidden spot first. This way, you check it won’t harm the paving material, especially if it’s a sensitive natural stone paver.”
Prior to cleaning your patio with washing powder, ensure you prepare the area thoroughly. Move any outdoor furniture to avoid potential damage, reports the Mirror. Next, sweep the paving to remove larger accumulations of dirt. Start by combining washing powder with warm water in a bucket.
Apply this mixture across the paving and allow it to sit for approximately 10 minutes, giving the chemicals time to dissolve grime and persistent stains.
After the solution has had sufficient time to work, use a soft-bristled brush and gently scrub the paving in a “diagonal way”. Be careful not to damage the jointing compound between the blocks.
Lastly, rinse the paving thoroughly with clean water to eliminate any lingering dirt and detergent residue.
For especially dirty sections, you may need to repeat this process multiple times. It’s also worthwhile checking the jointing compound and replenishing it where needed, as this maintains your block paving’s structural integrity and visual appeal.
