Residents and visitors can explore 15 private gardens in Shepherdstown during the annual Back Alley Garden Tour and Tea on May 16-17, according to a community announcement.

The self-guided tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets cost $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the event.

Event offers mix of history, art and horticulture

Shepherdstown, established in 1730, was named a Top 10 winner in the 2026 USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Award for Best Historic Small Town.

Participants can stroll through the town’s streets and alleys, viewing a variety of gardens and watching plein air artists at work. The tour is designed to inspire gardening ideas for attendees.

A traditional tea service with sweets and savories will be offered at the War Memorial Building,102 E. German St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour is a fundraiser sponsored by the Shepherdstown Community Club, with proceeds going toward maintaining and restoring the War Memorial Building and Morgan’s Grove Park.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at various shops in Shepherdstown, the Shepherdstown Sunday Farmers Market or through the Shepherdstown Community Club website. They also will be available at the War Memorial Building on the day of the tour.
