Well I love basil on our tomato & mozz sandwiches so I am definitely going to use this "trick" and see if I can't get a nice basil bush without the flowers that tell me it's past its prime! Then I can also use the snipped parts in my cooking too!
Yeah, but I don't need that much basil and when it flowers there are always bumblebees in it. Thus when I need some, I cut it at that position, but mostly I let it flowers to make the bees happy and as a result get lots of seeds.
Question: if you grow it in a pot like you have in the video, will it survive indoors over winter? If I prune one into a fluffy basil like that, how long could it live in the pot realistically? Hopefully forever but I'm no garden god
I had a 6 years old purple mountain basil! It was so big it had bark and the twin trunks were the width of my fingers! So sad it was the only casualty to my hospitalisation in 2024…
I had a basil plant like that back in 2022 didn't even know how it got that way it was a judge bush That was also back when I didn't know Rosemary and oregano were perennials
We call this topping in the cannabis grow community. Each cut makes the plant bush into 2 more branches, you can make a single plant a bush with this technique it works on many plants.
I've been growing my basil like this for years but I'm lately been just cutting constantly anytime the leaves grow back into a big Lush canopy I cut it back and make pesto that keeps the flowers at bay for a while and by the time it flowers ive got a years worth of pesto, I also grow literally a field of basil …not really just clusters of "basil forests" plant close together dont cut any it grows fine close up once its a chunk and takes the soil over rip it into pieces each chunk has 6-10 plants and thar pushes out a bush out of each chunk
