I'm clueless when it comes to all things gardening. Figured I'd give the hedges a trim to make it level with my neighbors. Right now it's not even and I've a load of bare patches.

Do I need to keep cutting into the branches to get it level, with even bigher bare patches or do I risk damaging the hedge?

    Looks like privet. If it is, it’ll come right back. Hope you checked for birds.

    Really shouldn’t be cutting hedges now, esp this early in nesting season. Wouldn’t worry about it growing back.

    Yeah like others have said don’t worry. I’ve green and golden and it always does it’s thing and comes back to life. It actually looks better after a good scalping especially the golden privet as the older foliage can get a bit more of disease on the leaves and the new foliage looks better.

    Oof, this really could have waited until nesting season is over 😓

    Shouldn’t be cutting a hedge this time of year, it’s nesting season.

    Wait till September till nesting season is done

    I have a feeling, that based on these comments, but I’m not 100% sure, but I think, you could have waited until nesting season was over.

    Your going to jail, probably for a long time. Get your affairs in order.

    I understand that it’s important to talk about nesting season, but you’re comments are passive and unhelpful. The hedge will be fine, and it’s highly unlikely that this would have impacted any nests. Nesting season is far more relevant to wild hedgerows. Don’t use that guidance to misguide people

    I’ve a similar one and cut it back into a slope a few years ago. Having it taper to be thinner at the top is what you want to do, so you’re going the right way about it here. Don’t worry about it being bare for now, it’ll eventually come back healthier than before (may take a year or two) and thinning it at the top allows for light to better reach the middle and bottom. I would have done it earlier myself, around March or so, but this is still a decent time.

    Bare branches are fine. Happens when you dont cut the hedge for a while. The leaves will grow back, dont worry.

  12. Not to derail this further but I’m looking to clarify this for myself…I’ve seen landscaping companies say that cutting is fine at anytime under the normal course of gardening.
    Now the wildlife act doesn’t say this specifically but it does say:

    Subsection (1) of this section shall not apply in relation to—
    (a) the destroying, in the ordinary course of agriculture or forestry, of any vegetation growing on or in any hedge or ditch;

    Ouch can’t believe you did this so early in the nutter semen.

    No it’s going to grow back fast.
