Hi all,

I was after some advice on suitible plants for this planter box in an apartment complex.

We used to have succulents there however they were removed after we had a leak and had to have it re waterproofed. The larger succulents were very heavy and probably not good as far as adding weight to the waterproofed box.

We are looking to replant and would like some simple easy to manage plants that will work in a north facing position. Soil depth is only 30-40cm and it receives harsh summer sun and full exposure to rain etc. based in Sydney NSW.

Being a unit block we are looking for very low maintenance and hardy species.

We are talking to our gardener but any advice appreciated!

Are you looking for height or bushiness to block sight lines? How important is the weight factor?

A light plant is a small plant, usually, or at least one without a trunk. I’d mulch the box and plant hardy groundcovers and small plants, like paper daisies and lomandra.

Or, native grasses (the bushy kind) might be an option. I imagine the roots would be relatively shallow.

Native rosemary (westringia) is a shrub that’s tough enough for roadside planting, but double check the size is appropriate. It can be pruned into shape.

Why not check out your local councils list of suggested plants? Some councils offer free plants through local nurseries to rate payers. Nursery staff may have suggestions.

There’s plenty of options for shallow planting beds. The issues with shallow beds are usually around drainage and then soil type it has in it.

I’d research plants suitable for rooftop gardens, but what you want to achieve as a landscape element should guide your choice and mix of species.
