It’s some kind of spurge AKA sandmat Euphorbia (previously *Chamaesyce*). There are many, and they can be hard to ID, but I’m not familiar with Texas species.
Edit: most are low-growing.

You grew yourself a nice weed.

Seconded, is a weed. They really suck up water and deplete other plants.

Pull off a leaf- if milky it is a weed. Pulled up dozens looking like that yesterday.

Well yeah, sure, spurge is generally considered a weed, but I think there’s no harm in letting your kids keep it alive in the pot. Those seeds are all over already, so it’s not like that one plant will make a big difference in the seed abundance in your yard. It’s a nice learning experience for the kids.
Take the opportunity to think of a couple things that might be more fruitful and interesting to grow, and suggest that they try those next.

Euphorba, I’d guess. It’s a super common weed where I’m at and it’s very competitive.

Probably Euphorbia hypericifolia, native. [https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/main.php?pg=show-key.php&keyid=40084](https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/main.php?pg=show-key.php&keyid=40084)
