That’s kind of a joke but, seriously, that’s the only way to keep it from getting disgusting. The other choice is just deal with the fact that their water will always be disgusting, and change it as often as you can.
Or get a large pond full of fish and aquatic plants, so the water stays nice while only the ground around it gets disgusting.

It doesn’t solve it but helps, swimming water is outside only. Buckets tall enough they can drink from but not get in indoors with their food. There’s still a nice ring of duck mess around the bucket within two seconds 😆

You could make a biofilter for a smaller 200-300 gallon pond if you don’t have a regular pond nearby. We did this and it worked great until we eventually filled in the pond. Nothing was wrong with it, we just got other geese to add to the flock and the group finally decided they would venture down the hill in front of the house to the real pond.
Used a 55 gallon food grade barrel, some PVC, and different sized aggregate (from bottom up – large stones/rip rap, gravel, pea gravel, and then 150-200 of crushed oyster shell as the top layer. You have a pump that brings the water to the top of the pvc column (think at least 2-3′ above the top of the barrel) the water than drops down the column to the bottom where I had 4 90 degree PVC elbows to try to constantly churn any sediment on the bottom of the barrel. The water pushed its way through the layers to the top and then there’s an outlet at the top. Put some creeping jenny on the top layer and it will keep the water clear as well. Hope this helps and makes sense!
I can draw it and take a picture if needed as well if it’s useful.

I solved it by getting rid of the ducks.
Seriously though have it where it can get wet and change daily.

I use a small pond or two depending on how many ducks I have; $5 kiddie pools work pretty well. I have to dump and clean them, but they’re for the birds to bathe in anyway.
For drinking water, I have nipple drinkers in my barn so they have access to clean drinking water all of the time. I find with nipple drinkers, they can’t foul up the water the way they do with bucket waterers or the pools themselves, so it’s less maintenance and everyone has clean water access for drinking.

Keep the ducks away from it.
